We’re just over a year away from Marvel’s next big event, Avengers Doomsday, but it’s never too early to speculate on how it plays out. Details surrounding this movie are scarce. There have been no announcements on the plot of the movie, only casting. Here’s who we know will be returning:

  • The Fantastic Four
  • Thunderbolts
  • Captain America
  • Doctor Strange
  • Spider-Man
  • Dr. Doom

There have also been rumors of Elizabeth Olsen and Chris Evans returning as well.

The only other thing we know is that Avengers Doomsday needs to lead into Secret Wars. By looking at the 2015 Secret Wars comic event, we can come to a lot of conclusions about how Doomsday will play out.

For example, we know that Avengers Doomsday will have to deal with incursions, include Dr. Doom as its main antagonist, and set up the creation of battleworld, if not outright show it. Therefore, I put together 3 theories for how I think Avengers Doomsday will come to an end and build hype for what might be the biggest Avengers movie of all.

1) Avengers Doomsday is Totally Self Contained

What if Avengers Doomsday is a standalone movie, and then Avengers Secret Wars is split into two parts?

The biggest problem with the MCU right now is that we haven’t seen enough of the new characters, nor have we had any interactions between them. When we sit down for Avengers Doomsday, we will have only seen Sam Wilson as Captain America twice and Shang-Chi once. That’s not even mentioning the Disney+ characters.

The MCU desperately needed a team up movie to establish their relationship and make us care. This could be that movie. It would also quell the fears that they’re rushing Dr Doom’s biggest story by giving him more time to develop.

But Robert Downey Jr. is too expensive for three movies. I know, I thought of that too. Here’s how it would play out:

Avengers Doomsday could open with an incursion between the main MCU and the Fantastic Four’s universe that brings the team and Dr Doom into the sacred timeline. They team up with the Avengers and Thunderbolts to take down Doom, and then spend the entirety of Secret Wars Part 1 finding a solution for incursions. We don’t see Dr Doom again until Secret Wars Part 2 when we arrive on battleworld.

That’s when we could see Doctor Strange as Doom’s right hand man, getting audiences intrigued for a third Strange film to see the story there.

Now, we have a new Avengers trilogy, a new team we care about, and a story that feels naturally developed. The only thing holding this back is the cost and production time of shooting another large Avengers film.

2) Avengers Doomsday Ends With a Cliffhanger like Time Runs Out

The Avengers of Earth 616 and 1610 battle in the Secret Wars (2015) comic event.

What if Avengers Doomsday ends on a cliffhanger like Time Runs Out (the comic prelude to Secret Wars 2015) did?

In that story, Earth 616 battles Earth 1610 (Ultimate Universe) but we don’t see the end of it until the start of the Secret Wars event.

Maybe a similar thing happens in Avengers Doomsday where we see the battle between two Earths in a major incursion, but don’t see the outcome, or battleworld, until Avengers Secret Wars. This other Earth could be the Fantastic Four‘s with any other heroes established to be there, or maybe Fox’s X-Men universe.

This would be a very exciting ending and no doubt generate a lot of hype for Avengers Secret Wars. However, one reason this may not happen is because I think Marvel wants Avengers Doomsday to stand on its own more. That would mean the movie is more self-contained, like I mentioned above, or…

3) Avengers Doomsday Ends With the Creation of Battleworld

What if Avengers Doomsday ends with Dr Doom winning and all of our heroes arriving in Battleworld?

I can totally see a version of this movie where it ends with the heroes failing to stop Dr Doom, leading to the final incursion completing and send all of our heroes to Battleworld.

This would set up everything that needs to be known for Avengers Secret Wars and would create another surprising moment similar to the snap in Avengers Infinity War. An ending like this would no doubt be a powerful one.

It could also cross-promote other properties. Imagine one or two movies taking place on battle world between these films. Depending on how Doctor Strange is used, we could see him end the film as a servant for Dr Doom, generating excitement for a third solo film.

The only problem is that this is almost identical to how Avengers Infinity War ended. The Russo Brothers have already said that they’re not trying to recreate Infinity War and Endgame, leading me to think that maybe this won’t be the case.

But what do you think? Which one of these theories is your favorite and let me know how you think it will end down below.
