The only thing I knew going into Companion was that the producers of Barbarian were involved. From that alone, I knew this would be a crazy movie.

Going in blind is by far the best way to experience this, so I’ll keep it short. All you need to know is that I definitely recommend this movie. If you’re still not convinced, then keep reading.

All I’ll say is that it involves a vacation and a “companionship” robot that malfunctions. It’s hard to say anything else without spoiling some of the more fun surprises. And trust me, there are a lot of them.

The best parts of Companion are these twists and turns. Each one took me by complete surprise and kept me engaged the entire time. But they go beyond shock value and allow the film to explore its themes more thoroughly. It’s thought provoking and shares similar DNA as Barbarian, thought this couldn’t be more different tonally.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in Companion is just how funny it is. The writers have done an amazing job poking fun at how silly this concept is while not taking away from anything else. It’s still an effective thriller and delivers a powerful message that shouldn’t be taken lightly. That’s not an easy line to tow but Companion makes it look effortless.

A lot of that can be attributed to the acting. Everyone does a fantastic job, but the two leads are absolute standouts. Jack Quaid kills it at playing the kind of guy you love to hate by the end of the movie. But it’s Sophie Thatcher at the heart of this movie. She’s so easy to feel for and does a fantastic job at driving home the message.

The Verdict

Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher in Companion.

Companion is a clever and hilarious thrill ride that leaves audiences with a lot more to talk about than just its twists. It’s a great time that you’ll definitely want to tell your friends about.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
